Taste of Pittsburgh gift basket updates…

Linda LudwigGift baskets, Pittsburgh Florist

We’ve been tweaking recipes to our Taste of Pittsburgh gift baskets, as we add some new La Dorita Dulce de LechePittsburgh products we’ve recently discovered.

One product we especially like is Dulce de leche from La Dorita in Sharpsburg.  Dulce de leche is a milk spread from Argentina that is similar to caramel.   It can be used as a spread for bread or toast, as a topping for pancakes, or can be served warm over ice cream.  It’s great this time of year as a dip for apples.  It is featured in our A ‘Burgh Homecoming basket, or may be added to any of our fruit and gourmet baskets.

After many years, we are again using a Natrona Bottling product in our baskets.  Natrona’s Red Ribbon Natrona bottling Red Ribbon Cherry Supreme SodaCherry Supreme soda is their flagship product.  It is made in small batches using 100% cane sugar and other high quality ingredients.  Natrona is one of the last soda makers still bottling in glass.  A bottle of Red Ribbon Cherry Supreme can be found in our Pittsburgh Snack Sampler and Black and Gold baskets.

Biscotti Brothers traditional Italian bakery in Greensburg is our new source for biscotti and pizelles for our Pittsburgh baskets.  Their classic biscotti have no preservatives, no trans-fats, no artificial flavors and no GMO ingredients, while being Kosher certified.  Both biscotti and pizelles are delicious, and can be added to any of our fruit and gourmet baskets.

Our Taste of Pittsburgh baskets are a favorite gift for anyone who is a fan of “da Burgh.”  We can deliver them locally, or ship anywhere in the US with FedEx.  Keep them in mind for the upcoming holidays!

Calling all plant nerds…

Linda LudwigPlants

Jim Ludwig writes:

Are there any plant collectors out there?  Back in the 70’s I fell in love with plants.    When Linda and I got married, our first apartment was very small.   I didn’t have room for any large plants.  I collected Gesneriads: mini violets, miniature Sinningias, Episcias, Nematanthus (goldfish plants) and Aeschynanthus (lipstick plants.) My prized rare plant was a variegated Chirita sinensis.

Recently, when I found a grower in Florida that sold episcias and chiritas, I had to buy them.  Does anyone else have a love or fascination for these colorful relatives of the African violet?  They could be your introduction to the wonderful Gesneriad family of plants.  My wife long ago had the philosophy that if we were going to spend the time watering and caring for plants, they better have some redeeming values. These plants are easy to grow, and reward you with colorful blooms throughout the year.

We have episcias in 5” pots priced at $18.50 and chiritas in a 6” pots at $28.50.  My special offer to anyone who actually reads this blog is 1/3 off!

Our latest shipment of plants also contains some other beauties. We have a Kimberly Queen fern in a 12” pot, 40” tall and full (great for the front porch or patio!) at $29.50.  Have you ever seen a large pink anthurium plant full of blooms?  We have one in the store, priced at $75.00.

How about a plant with vibrant lime green leaves?   It’s called a  dracaena limelight, and we have it in 6” and 8″ pots.

We also have a new crispy wave fern that has not even been introduced to the market. Finally, people often ask for the aloe plant, which is a great item to have around the house, as it’s gel will soothe burns.  We have aloe hedgehogs in stock!

If you ever get the desire to talk to a plant nerd, I guess I am one.  Drop by, or give me a call at the store.  I always love to talk plants!

Send flowers to Andy Warhol for his birthday…

Linda LudwigPittsburgh Florist

Today would have been Pittsburgh native Andy Warhol’s 85th birthday.

To mark the occasion, the Andy Warhol Museum and EarthCam launched a collaborative project titled Figment, a live feed of Warhol’s grave site. This live feed, is viewable 24 hours a day, seven days a week, worldwide.

Visitors to EarthCam’s website have the opportunity send Andy a gift of flowers or a soup can (from the Blumengarten, of course!) delivered to his grave site.  A portion of the proceeds from the orders will be donated to The Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank.

Aside from the normal camera view on EarthCam’s website, there’s a “pop” view that displays the grave in Warhol-esque colors and another camera set up at St. John Chrysostom Byzantine Catholic Church, where Andy was baptized. The cameras allow users to make screen captures and post images to Twitter and Facebook.

Andy Warhol died in 1987 when he was just 58.
